Black Frost Distilling Announces Small Batch Rum Release 

New Ulm, Minnesota, July 31st, 2025 - Black Frost Distilling is proud to announce the release  of its Small Batch Rum on Friday, August 1st, 2025. This is the third rum released by the  Minnesota-based whiskey and rum distillery, joining their award-winning unaged Rum and  Overproof Rum. Black Frost Small Batch Rum was distilled from 100% blackstrap molasses and was aged in a blend of new and used Minnesota-grown oak barrels, adding a touch of northern terroir to the otherwise tropical spirit. 

Black Frost Small Batch Rum is the culmination of a rather unexpected journey while making  the best of a bad situation. A year-long pause in distillery construction during COVID led to co-founder and master distiller Jace Marti going on a deep dive into historic rum production. The discovery of an obscure method for creating “heavy” rums designed for export to continental Europe sparked a curiosity that led to the unique style of rums that Black Frost is producing today.  

“I went deep down the rabbit hole of historic rum production literature, and began to try and recreate a little-known method developed in Puerto Rico in the 1930’s. The process requires a  very specific type of yeast and undergoes an unorthodox fermentation. After countless trials and tribulations, scouring the globe to track down the yeast strain, and adapting this method to  work in our distillery, we feel that we have produced something that we think is not only  delicious, but is also truly unique.” 

The Small Batch Rum starts with Louisiana-grown blackstrap molasses, and then follows the  nearly century-old process to produce a truly one-of-a-kind rum. “The first time we attempted to make this rum, I remember coming to the distillery one morning, and the entire building was filled with the most incredible fruity, rose-like aroma radiating from the fermenters. That’s when I  knew we were onto something special.” After distillation, the rum is then matured in a mixture of new and used Minnesota-grown oak barrels for at least two years. The result is a uniquely full-flavored rum, brimming with juicy tropical fruit notes and spiced pineapple character atop layers of rich vanilla and molasses.  

Black Frost Small Batch Rum will be an ongoing release, bottled at 92 proof in 750ml bottles. It will be available for purchase at the distillery and the finest retail locations throughout  Minnesota starting August 1st, with a suggested retail price of $40.
